DESK 003 – Sheridan Lumber Design Desk

Sheridan Lumber
recently started stocking butch block counter tops and to show off this new product they asked Philosopher’s Anvil to create a new industrial design inspired conference table for their showroom.  We have not been too active on the table projects as of late so the request was a welcome distraction.

The butcher block slabs are stocked in several sizes, the largest being 5′ by 10′!!  This large format is quite exciting as most wood based materials are limited in width.  Immediately the ideas started flowing.  After discussing a few of the concepts with Sheridan Lumber we settled on a design that was on the practical side.  The table after all was going to be used in their showroom as a design desk for clients.

Our raw materials for this project will be 1/4″ steel plate, W8x15 structural steel, and of course the butcher block.

With the previous design we let our minds go wild with ideas and that inevitably lead to complicated assemblies.  This time around K.I.S.S. would be the guiding principle.  Keep it simple you imbecile.  Although these legs weigh ten times more than the last style they were simple to make and look the business.2015-09-12 11.04.26 (576x1024)For our next trick we made opening in the table face to allow the I beam (W-shape) to show through.

Sheridan Lumber provided a selection of butcher block and teak oils to use for finishing the table top. We went with the teak oil as this particular table would not be used for food prep. Here is the finished table before moving into Sheridan’s showroom.

Poetry

Seeing as I am dredging up this old site I might just dredge up some old work too.  I wrote the following while backpacking through Spain some time ago.  I thought I would be appropriate as the projects PA has gotten involved in have changed somewhat.  Still wrestling with ideas just doing it over a different muse these days.  Enjoy the words.

I have seen the great palace of El Escorial
Turned into a monastery
I have seen the fortified walls of Avila
Laid sieged to by a city
And came to know things change.

I have witnessed the famed bull fights of Las Ventas
I have walked the galleries of Del Prado,
And have found beauty and violence inseparable.

Desk 001 – PA’s first project

Danny came to me one day a few months ago all excited about some desk being made in New Zealand or something.  It was a little pricey and on the other side of the world.  He said “Miguel I would like to commission you to build this table for me.”  That is just how Danny talks when he is excited about something.  I said “no, but what I will do is teach you how to build it”  And that’s how we started on the first table.

Over beers at PRL we discussed how we could change the design it something more repeatable and unique.  One of the challenges we saw with the inspirational piece was its weight.  Danny lives on the 11th floor of a condo and lugging that original desk up a flight of stairs was just not appealing to me.  We settled in the hexagonal legs you see in this first table.  2013-08-27 22.21.19

From there we talked about the wood to use for the table top.  I happen to work at a lumber yard and we had some distress Western Red Ceder that has been around since well my dad was my age.  My thought was why distress good material when we have distressed material to work with.  Ultimately we un-distressed the ceder just to re-distress it.  It was a confusing time in our lives.

When we finished applying the finish to the first desk top I stepped back and comment to Danny “We have a product on our hands.”  Up to that point we were just making a desk for Danny.  It was only after we finished did we realize we had something that was worthy of marketing.

Welcome to Philosopher’s Anvil

If you have found this corner of the web your either interested in industrial furniture or see the world a little skewed.  Hopefully both.

Danny and I, Miguel, started Philosopher’s Anvil out of a desire to wrestle with steel, wood, glass, and ideas.  Our first project was to build Danny a desk.  Unfortunately for Danny it turned out so nice we sold it!  And received orders for three more.

Follow along with us on this adventure to wrestle with the raw materials of life.
